Dear Current Occupant

Dear Current Occupant is a nonfiction memoir about home and belonging, set in the 80s and 90s of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

The author writes about cracks in the sidewalk, and “looking back in time as yellow umbrellas flicker like cracks in the brain,” and, finally, cracks in the narrative, transformed to hope by filling them with gold. So the idea of cracks inspired this cover design, where the text partially obscures the image of the author’s childhood neighbourhood — fully visible only through “cracks” or the spaces between and within the type.
