This beautiful cultural centre had just turned five years old in 2016 and was looking for a new fundraising tool that outlined how crucial it had become in the life of the city. They had seen a Case for Support that I had designed for the World Wildlife Fund for Nature and were looking for something similar — a multi-page document with a stiff cover and a pocket on the back for current documents.
I teamed up with Julie Stauffer of Cadmium Red, who had written the WWF Case for Support. We arranged for a photographer to cover a stage rehearsal, with the intent of using a single image of a child immersed in performance to represent potential, making an immediate emotional connection with the reader — and illustrating the title, “It’s Magic.”

Inside, significant stakeholders and donors were shown, accompanied by their testimonials in bold, hand-drawn colour blocks. The headlines for each section follow the same structure as the document title — “It’s transformational,” “It’s captivating,” etc.
The script font created a handmade look and evoked the creative spirit, with lines (threads) running through the document, drawing the eye forward, symbolizing the threads that are spun by the arts to hold community together. This was used in combination with the Centre’s house typestyle, DIN, keeping the look clean and contemporary and ensuring consistency with their other promotional material.
