Set in the 90s, alternating between the storied quads of Oxford University and the dank recesses of London pubs given over to public displays of queer BDSM, Learned chronicles poet and Rhodes Scholar Carellin Brooks’ extreme explorations of mind and body.
The cover uses a stock silhouette of the Oxford campus as its basis, with risqué alterations. The Gothic architecture lends itself surprisingly well to the silhouettes of BDSM sex toys. I adapted URW’s blackletter typestyle, Breite Kanzlei, for the title, adding a bullwhip to the D.
I designed this book as smaller than usual to harken back to trashy pocketbooks – making it stand out from other poetry books, emphasizing its unusual “poetry-novel” form.
