Thomas Video was a Guelph cultural mainstay from 1983 to 2017. It held out longer than most bricks-and-mortar video stores before succumbing to the Internet. Key to its longevity — and what made this video store different from the big box rentals and algorithm-powered online services — was its personality. When, nearing Thomas Video’s 30th anniversary, proprietor Ian Findlay was looking for a new logo, I suggested bringing back an early tag line that had fallen into disuse, “Recommended by friends,” as the cornerstone of the new identity.
With 50s-era fonts, colours and forms, classic tragedy/comedy faces that also say “conversation,” and movie theatre curtains, this logo has multiple levels of meaning (like the auteur films that Ian Findlay loved to champion) within a few simple forms.
This logo was a Finalist in the 2014 Canadian Regional Design Awards.
