Write Across Canada
Write Across Canada, published by Book*hug Press for the Toronto International Festival of Writers, showcases emerging writers working in Canada today.
The concept was clear at the outset: Somehow to show the words “Write Across” literally writing across Canada. But the execution proved challenging. After trying unsuccessfully to depict our nation without getting into cliché, I harkened back to the great Canadian modernist design of the 60s and 70s, setting the word “CANADA” in a 2x3 grid, taking up the entire cover. To connote a nation and creative profession in flux (and avoid a stacked AAA), I introduced some disarray in the three As. Once I rotated the top one 90 degrees, I realized that it fit nicely into the mouth of the C, becoming a sort of megaphone. That is where I put the handlettered “write across.”
I was happy to feature prominently Canadian designer Rod McDonald’s Classic Grotesque, which he created in 2012, a synthesis mid-20th Century roots of Akzidenz, Helvetica and Univers.
