GWC_Logo_RGB_Outline

The Greenbelt West Coaltion logo is based on a compass, with the W in the west position and leaves at north and south. The W is part of the circle (representing the coalition) and wraps around it like a belt.

“We won’t touch the Greenbelt.”

I directed and created graphics for this video, which had as its soundtrack Ford’s infamous soundbites, put to music by local rap artist Noah23 and generously produced by video artist Steve D’Alimonte. (The soundtrack was used effectively at rallies around Ontario.)

Greenbelt West Coalition

In the 2018 Ontario election campaign, Doug Ford said, “Unequivocally, we won’t touch the Greenbelt. I’ve heard it loud and clear; people don’t want me touching the Greenbelt, we won’t touch the Greenbelt.”

In November 2022, he broke that promise and “touched” the Greenbelt, opening up 7,400 acres of the 8,094 square km area—protected for farming, nature, clean water, and a bulwark against the climate crisis—to development. Citizens and environmental groups sprang into action. Environmental Defence coordinated the Toronto campaign, while the Greenbelt West Coalition — formed earlier to convince the government to expand the Greenbelt westward— focused on putting pressure on rural Conservative MPPs.

I designed a logo, lawn signs (based on a graphic identity established by Environmental Defence), and socials for quick grassroots action. Aided by excellent investigative reporting by The Narwhal and Toronto Star and auditor general Bonnie Lysyk’s report that developers connected to Ford were going to be $8.3 billion richer, the campaign paid off: Ford went from calling the Greenbelt “just a big scam” to promising to reverse the changes: “It was a wrong decision. We‘re putting this land back in the Greenbelt.” The decision came after meeting with his caucus, who told him their constituents were angry the Greenbelt changes.

The campaign continues: Ford recently said that Ontarians “don’t give too hoots” about his government’s bill to return land to the Greenbelt and is quietly avoiding putting back in place all Greenbelt protections.

Greedbelt_Logo

I created this satirical update to the official Greenbelt logo after attending the Ford Fest protest in Kitchener on September 8, 2023—unused, as it was the same week that Ford caved and promised to reverse his changes.
