This logo is inspired by the twin arches of the historical (and endangered) Quinlan Bridge over the Eramosa River.

The central bridge M forms the social media icon.
The Eramosa Institute was established in 2003 in Rockwood, Ontario to promote informed public dialogue on issues of public policy, social justice, and the humanities, in Canada and internationally. It founded The Guelph Lecture—On Being, now part of ArtsEverywhere Festival. The institute is being reinvigorated, expanding its role as a non-partisan, non-polarizing, and research-based platform for thoughtful civic engagement.

The old logo.
The word “eramosa” is symmetrical, with the middle M linking “era” and “osa.” I wanted to emphasize the institute’s mandate to bridge divisions. The M here evokes the double arcs of the historic McQuillan’s Bridge. It is also intended to be viewed as a bird in flight.
I also wanted to depict a river somehow. Using an adapted typographic tilde (~), I created a river symbol to underline the M and raise it above the “riverbanks” to the left and right.
